The local rural wildlife…

Because Wonderful Wilderness really is wilderness camping, we wanted to give you a little heads-up about something that sometimes comes with the territory... flies, midges and other tiny countryside residents!

We are lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful, unspoilt Welsh countryside, rather than concrete, tarmac and closely manicured lawns. The amount varies enormously with the weather and conditions. Warm, still and humid weather can encourage insect activity, while windier or cooler conditions can make them much less noticeable. Unfortunately, this is something we can't control, and it's certainly not unique to our campsite. Anyone spending time camping, walking or enjoying the countryside can encounter them.

Flies are a natural part of the countryside and play an important role in the wider ecosystem. Their numbers can increase dramatically after prolonged periods of warm weather, particularly when followed by a sudden change in conditions, such as rain. This can trigger large numbers of flies to emerge or become active at the same time, so you may occasionally experience a sudden increase in activity. Thankfully, these peaks are usually temporary and can pass as quickly as they appear.

Midges are also a natural part of the rural environment and tend to be most noticeable in certain conditions, particularly around dawn and dusk and in sheltered, damp areas. As they are weak fliers, even a gentle breeze can make a significant difference to their activity. Midges can start to appear from about mid-May until September. During consistently very hot weather, when humidity is low, they may not appear at all! Weather really does make a difference. You might have a inspect-free stay one week and notice more the next, simply because the conditions have changed.

A few simple ways to stay comfortable:

If insects are particularly active during your visit, there are a few easy things you can do:

• Bring a good insect repellent and apply it as directed.

• Long, lightweight sleeves and trousers can help, particularly around dawn and dusk.

• Keep tent / campervan doors closed and insect screens zipped up when you're not coming in and out.

• A little breeze or airflow can make a big difference to midges - mini battery operated fans are great!

A note about refunds:

Because flies and midges are naturally occurring parts of the rural environment and are outside our control, we are unable to offer refunds or compensation because of their presence (please see full T's and C's in our Read Our Policies section). This is the same principle as our approach to rain, wind or other normal weather conditions. We can't control the weather, and we can't control the wildlife that comes with being in the countryside.

Wonderful Wilderness isn't a manicured holiday park, it's an opportunity to switch off, get away from it all and sleep under huge dark skies, surrounded by unspoilt nature. And sometimes nature comes with wings! It's all part of the wilderness experience and, we think, part of the charm. If you are looking for a completely insect-free outdoor experience, rural wilderness camping may not be the right fit for you. But if you're happy to embrace the wildness, enjoy the peace and accept that you're sharing the countryside with a few of its smallest inhabitants, we think you're going to love it here.

Welcome to the wilderness!
